Neurodiversity & The Cyber Talent Pipeline |

Hi Residents of Cheshire,
Hyperfocus, pattern recognition, and goal-seeking. The traits we look for in top cyber talent are the exact reasons neurodiverse teens risk falling into cybercrime.
Data shows that a significant proportion of young people referred to the UK's cybercrime prevention units are neurodivergent or autistic. These are teenagers with an extraordinary affinity for computers. They don’t see an IT network—they see a highly complex puzzle that they are intensely driven to solve.
Unfortunately, online gaming forums and dark-web spaces easily exploit this trait. To a teenager hyper-focusing on bypassing a firewall or deploying a gaming "booter" tool, it’s just a puzzle. Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, it's an offense.
The Case of "Ethan":
Ethan is autistic and struggled heavily with traditional offline social environments. Online, he found a community that praised his ability to find network vulnerabilities, solving puzzles was his passion. Before he turned 16, Ethan was on the verge of facing severe legal penalties for an unauthorised corporate network breach.
When the police intervened, they didn't prosecute. Ethan was referred to the national Cyber Choices - National Crime Agency programme.
The Cyber Choices team understood Ethan’s neurodivergent traits. They didn’t punish his obsession with problem-solving—they redirected it legally. They provided structured boundaries, introduced him to ethical hacking frameworks, and arranged for a mentor in the tech sector. Today, Ethan is fast-tracking his way toward a highly paid, legal career in defensive cybersecurity.
The Lesson for Tech Leaders: We cannot afford to lose this talent pipeline to the criminal justice system.
Neurodiverse minds have the exact cognitive strengths needed to close the cybersecurity skills gap. They don't belong in a courtroom; they belong in our security operations centres (SOCs).
Let’s safeguard our brightest digital assets by redirecting them early.
Kind regards
Stephen Blake 20406 Cyber Prevent Officer
